Timberline - a novel © Sam Malone 2001-2
Don't hit me. Don't hit me.
You're not even a wolf.
I never said I was.
What are you doing in that thicket?
Nothing.
Who sent you to spy on us?
No one. I only wondered what the noise was.
Let's do him, Syl.
You'd better come out or I'll set her on you.
Set me on him anyway.
We can't. He knows where our den is. He wasn't blindfolded, was he?
So what? He wouldn't hurry back here.
He could tell someone though. We don't know who he's working for.
I'm not working for anyone. What did you get in the trap?
Just an adder. We get so many we let it go.
Wow. I caught a grass snake last summer. I kept it for a week.
How did you catch it?
I just saw it there and picked it up. But I'd really like to see how you trap them.
If we're not going to do him let's just let him go.
Don't you reckon we could use another spear thrower? It'd improve our chances if we got rushed. And he seems to know a bit about catching things.
Syl. He's a boy.
Let's have a vote on it. The three of us. You can come out. We probably won't hurt you, but I can't make any promises.
There aren't any wolves in the day. Sylvia said so.
Not normally there aren't. But if they're really hungry they'll come out anytime. And that's when they're at their most dangerous.
I don't think we have much choice, Cait.
Can he even handle a weapon?
Can you handle a weapon?
My dad lets me shoot his sometimes, just at tin cans.
You mean you haven't even got your own catapult?
Not a catapult. A gun.
I guess we've heard enough. Everyone in favour raise your right hand.
Excellent. I'm Bel. I'll do everything I can to help you catch a wolf.
Catch one?
Isn't that what you're doing?
Oh, yes, one or two. Just to guard the den.
Are you looking to catch a grown-up or a cub?
We're not fussy.
A cub might make more sense. Then you can train it, be its master.
That's what we figured too.
I thought we were just killing them.
We were only going to kill them if they attacked us when we were getting a cub. Don't you remember, Patti?
Ow. Oh. Yes. I remember now.
If you don't mind me saying, I don't think we'll trap a cub here. They don't leave the safety of the den until they're near enough too old to train. If we want to get a cub or two we'll need to find the den.
Oh God.
What?
She said oh good. Patti loves doing stuff like that, don't you, Patti?
Chapter Seven
We do need someone else to fight the wolves. But it's a shame it has to be a boy.
OK. You can come in now. You can hang around with us for a while and we'll see how you make out.
