Psionics and Schizophrenia
The art/science of psionics aims to harness a natural phenomenon - that of how rapidly flashing lights can have certain effects on the brain. A typical psionic "mind machine" will give the user control over the speed of the light pulses via goggles and a small machine.
I'm here reproducing the intro I received with my mind machine, from:

These machines are useful tools for helping people explore and come to terms with the weird and wondrous nature of the unconscious mind. I have been researching electronic aids to psychological work, psychotechnology if you like, over the last ten years, both in work with patients and by a great deal of self-experimentation. My particular interest is the accessing of vivid visual imagery from the unconscious with the aid of stroboscopic light, flickering light.
The devices I make are not particularly original in their fundamental conception. They are all variations upon well tried and tested themes. I do believe however that I have stripped away the gimmicks, hype and frills to concentrate on beefing up the basics. My machines are not toys dreamt up by electronic engineers excited by a smattering of neuroscience. They are work tools, demon-busting weaponry, from the front-line of psychotech, the psychoanalytic consulting room, where people in mental distress confront the full horror of the strangeness within them. It is of course a moot point the extent to which these same tools can be of use to the person at home, unsupervised, and perhaps unfamiliar with the dynamics and ways of the unconscious. There is certainly a need to be wary, but the potential benefits are of such magnitude that the experiment has to be made.
My machine has been unbelievably helpful in helping me to sort out my own wiring. If you're thinking of getting a machine, make sure it's one that gives you the control, rather than just running pre-recorded tapes.
